I started as a Nuclear Missile Officer in the Air Force.

Secret #1:
Become
BRAVE
B...Bold. Negotiators know what they want, and though they feel fear of rejection and potential adverse outcomes, they make the ask anyway. They are aggressive but not domineering.

R...Realistic. Negotiators don't peddle in the fantasy of their present situation. They can envision incredible outcomes, but they are grounded in the brutality of their reality.

A...Authentic. They don't pretend. For example, if they are introverted, then they negotiate as an introvert. They are who they appear to be.

V...Visionary. Their vision of their potential future is their lodestar. They help others see that potential and the path to get there.

E...Empathetic. They can see the problem through the eyes of the other party. While negotiators may not agree, they take the time to understand.
Secret #2:
Open Opportunities to Overcome Obstacles
Great negotiators are creative. While they understand their current difficulties, they have developed the ability to find solutions to a better outcome.

However, it isn't enough just to come up with clever ideas. To find lasting solutions, those ideas must have secondary ideas about how to implement the solutions.

Creativity can be learned. And to be a great negotiator, it must be mastered.

BOLD Negotiators don't stop until the improbable becomes a reality.
Secret #3:
Lead and Leverage

Many great ideas have died a quiet death because the authors of those ideas could not marshal the right people at the right time.

Negotiators help others to see their vision and solutions. Inspiring others to bring to life their vision and solutions together is at the heart of leadership.

Leaders are not born; they are discovered through experience and taught at the knee of failure.

Great leaders use leverage (both negative and positive) to maximize the resources around them. However, they never use leverage to exploit the weak or demand obedience.

BOLD Negotiators influence others through their example to follow them in the fight to overcome obstacles.
Secret #4:
Develop Disciplined Determination

Real negotiators know that additional effort is needed to overcome that which hasn't been resolved before.

Many times, it isn't just raw effort that is required. Instead, patience and persistence are the missing elements that allow the necessary space for success to hatch.

Once the BOLD and BRAVE Negotiator leads their team and inspires and persuades the other side in creating solutions, planning the path forward is essential. Once prepared, with discipline and determination, they implement their plan.
